About Edison Park in Chicago, IL Jean-Baptise Point du Sable was the first non-native settler to the area that later became Chicago. He arrived in the 1780s and is considered the founder of Chicago. Native Americans and non-natives lived together in the area until the end of the War of 1812 when The Treaty of St. Louis forced the Native Americans to give their land to the United States. With the new land, the Illinois state government decided to build the city of Chicago. They hired James Thompson in 1829 to survey the area a create a design for the town. At that point, fewer than 100 people were living there. Chicago was first incorporated as a town in 1833 and reincorporated four years later as a city. Today, more than 2.7 million people call this city home. Edison Park is both a neighborhood and community area in North Side Chicago. The neighborhood has one of the highest concentrations of people of Irish heritage, and more than 75% of the community has Irish ancestry. Edison Park was named after Thomas Edison, the famed American inventor and businessman.
